Skin Care Edit

It is no surprise that Canadians cherish their summers more so than most, and for no other good reason than because IT’S SO SHORT! Like you, I have taken to enjoying the heat, sun, and all the fun that comes along with summer, including direct sun exposure, forgetful sunscreen application, and just a laissez-fair approach to taking care of my skin.

All of this, of course, takes a toll on our skin, and now is the time to kickstart your skincare regime into high gear.

Follow these three tips for more beautiful skin that will see you through the year:

TIP 1 – HYDRATE, HYDRATE, HYDRATE

Keeping your complexion looking hydrated and balmy during autumns drier months begins with swapping out your lighter (summer) moisturizer for a heavier cream-based one. Heavier creams are a must to protect your skin from the added stress the cold brings. Look for creams that contain vitamin C to help brighten skin and fight dullness caused by seasonal skin transitions.

Using a humidifier in addition to your moisturizing routine works wonders for dry skin too. Humidifiers help counteract dry air by infusing your skin with the moisture it has lost through evaporation.

What about staying hydrated on the inside too? Celebrities swear by the positive effects of drinking lots of water to keep their skin hydrated all year round. We know drinking water flushes out toxins and improves the look of your skin, so why not join them?!

TIP 2 - EXFOLIATE AND CLEANSE

No matter how much you hydrate your skin, the effects will be minimal if you do not exfoliate your skin. Your skin may be left feeling dry and flaky due to the summer sun, so it is best to use a gentle hydrating exfoliator as part of your cleansing routine, once a week at most. Exfoliation stimulates oil-producing glands to replace lost moisture and helps to brighten and rid skin of any dullness caused by dead skin cells. Exfoliate in moderation, though, to avoid irritation and acne caused by overstimulating oil production. For cleansers, opt for liquid cleansers and avoid soap. Look for gentle products you can use daily without any alcohol and fragrances that can cause irritation.

TIP 3 – DOUBLE PROTECT

I can’t stress the importance of wearing sunscreen all year round to protect skin from skin cancer, fine lines, wrinkles, sunspots, and collagen depletion. Adding in an antioxidant like vitamin C serum to the mix also doubles up your UV protection against free radicals from sun exposure, often missed by sunscreen alone. Add both to maximize protection, and your skin will thank you.
