COVID-19 has impacted us in more ways than we could have ever imagined. This global virus has affected all aspects of our lives, from social distancing to taking away our livelihoods. Yesterday, I sat down to recall how life was before the emergence of this coronavirus disease and tears flowed freely from my eyes.
We walked the streets unfettered. We laughed and hugged each other through good times and bad. As social beings, we have now been forced beyond our control to stay physically apart. I cannot stop to wonder if life will ever be the same again.
Life is not going to be as usual any time soon, but there are two ways we can respond to the changes this virus has created in our lives. You can either fold your hands helplessly in continuous grief or look to the truths that have been revealed since the emergence of this virus.
Truth be told, how often have we taken the privilege of companionship for granted? How often have we put off the words that were meant to be said today for tomorrow, not minding that tomorrow is never promised? How often have we treated another human unkindly, not considering if a little kindness might have been just what that person needed as hope to go through yet another day? How often have we usurped another person's property, thinking we will live forever? How often have we taken more than we needed, forgetting there are millions of people who can barely afford a meal a day?
More importantly, how often have we neglected our mental health and well-being through the hurdles of life when good health and well-being is in itself the best wealth one can ever acquire!
Reflecting on questions such as these can assist in bringing awareness to what this virus has revealed as the most important virtues in life and what is not. Life after COVID-19 should be spent being nothing else but HUMAN above all else. This is because in being human, you will learn to never take any moment with a loved one for granted. You will learn to be kind to other people because you can never tell what they are going through. You will learn to help the poor and needy. You will learn to value your health and well-being because an unhealthy mind and body cannot be fit enough to contribute positively to humanity. You will also learn, most importantly, to tell the people you care about how much you love them.
What truths have been revealed to you while living during this pandemic, and how do you intend to spend the rest of your life after this is over?
